College Goal Sunday coming to Olympic College

Bremerton Patriot, Jan. 23, 2011 – Olympic College will host the College Goal Sunday event at the Bremerton campus from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 in the Science and Technology (Sci-Tech) building. The event is free and open to all.

College Goal Sunday is a statewide volunteer program that is free for students and their parents to gain assistance in applying for financial aid for post-secondary education. Read more here

College Goal Washington set on Jan. 25, 2012 at Olympic College-Shelton

Want to go to college but don’t know if you can afford it? Don’t know where to start? Olympic College-Shelton in partnership with the Shelton School District and College Bound/College Success, will host College Goal Washington from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012at 937 W. Alpine Way in Shelton. These free workshops will help individuals learn about many financial resources available for college.

Olympic College scholarships awarded at local scholarship competition

Kitsap Sun, Jan. 8, 2012 – Miss Kitsap Jessicajae Townsend, and contestants Chelsey Garcia and Celine Evans each won a $1,000 scholarship to Olympic College during the Miss Poulsbo, Miss Kitsap, and Miss Silverdale Scholarship Competition held Saturday, Jan. 7.

Since 2005, the Olympic College Foundation has awarded nearly $25,000 in scholarships at the competition. Read more here

Free holiday concert Dec. 7

Olympic College’s Jazz and Wind Ensemble to Perform Live with Special Guests Rich Wetzel and The Groovin’ Higher Jazz Orchestra

To set off this winter’s festivities, Olympic College will present a free holiday concert for the entire community on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center. A special live performance will be conducted by Olympic College’s Jazz and Wind Ensemble, along with special guests Rich Wetzel and The Groovin’ Higher Jazz Orchestra. 

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center at 1500 13th Street in Bremerton. Admission is free and open to the public.

Tacoma-based trumpeter Rich Wetzel is well known as a powerful, high-energy lead player and high-note specialist. His name appears on Arturo Sandoval’s list of influential trumpet players, and he received accolades from trumpet legend Wayne Bergeron. Wetzel also played for The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Spinners, The Coasters, and The Platters.

Wetzel’s own projects include the Blue Moon Howlers, a swing, jazz and R&B revue; and the Groovin’ Higher Orchestra, a 15-piece big band that brings back to life the classic music of Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Buddy Rich. “This group is my dream band, the one I have dreamed of having all my life,” said Wetzel.

Sophia Bremer Child Development Center recognized for architectural design

Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal, Nov. 4, 2011 - The Sophia Bremer Child Development Center at Olympic College in Bremerton was recognized for its design recently. Rice Fergus Miller designed the building, which won the People’s Choice award from the International Interior Design Association’s North Pacific Chapter. The LEED Silver building, which includes seven dedicated childcare rooms, administrative offices, and a classroom is a teaching facility and childcare center that serves approximately 100 children.  Read more here

‘Overwhelming’ demand for spots in engineering program at OC

Kitsap Sun, Nov. 7, 2011 – ‘The mechanical-engineer baccalaureate is even more in demand among students, who take two years of preparatory classes including math and science as part of the OC curriculum before jumping track for the final two years under the WSU curriculum to get a WSU degree.

This year’s junior class is at capacity with 19 students, and the number of students in OC’s preparatory classes is simply burgeoning.’ Read more here
