Free holiday concert Dec. 7

Olympic College’s Jazz and Wind Ensemble to Perform Live with Special Guests Rich Wetzel and The Groovin’ Higher Jazz Orchestra

To set off this winter’s festivities, Olympic College will present a free holiday concert for the entire community on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center. A special live performance will be conducted by Olympic College’s Jazz and Wind Ensemble, along with special guests Rich Wetzel and The Groovin’ Higher Jazz Orchestra. 

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center at 1500 13th Street in Bremerton. Admission is free and open to the public.

Tacoma-based trumpeter Rich Wetzel is well known as a powerful, high-energy lead player and high-note specialist. His name appears on Arturo Sandoval’s list of influential trumpet players, and he received accolades from trumpet legend Wayne Bergeron. Wetzel also played for The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Spinners, The Coasters, and The Platters.

Wetzel’s own projects include the Blue Moon Howlers, a swing, jazz and R&B revue; and the Groovin’ Higher Orchestra, a 15-piece big band that brings back to life the classic music of Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Buddy Rich. “This group is my dream band, the one I have dreamed of having all my life,” said Wetzel.

Enroll in Olympic College’s Culinary Arts Institute for 2012 Winter Quarter

Looking for a career in culinary arts and hospitality management but don’t know where to start? Right now, Olympic College’s Culinary Arts Institute is advising students for the 2012 Winter Quarter. This nationally accredited program provides in-depth training and valuable hands-on experience.

Sophia Bremer Child Development Center recognized for architectural design

Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal, Nov. 4, 2011 - The Sophia Bremer Child Development Center at Olympic College in Bremerton was recognized for its design recently. Rice Fergus Miller designed the building, which won the People’s Choice award from the International Interior Design Association’s North Pacific Chapter. The LEED Silver building, which includes seven dedicated childcare rooms, administrative offices, and a classroom is a teaching facility and childcare center that serves approximately 100 children.  Read more here

‘Overwhelming’ demand for spots in engineering program at OC

Kitsap Sun, Nov. 7, 2011 – ‘The mechanical-engineer baccalaureate is even more in demand among students, who take two years of preparatory classes including math and science as part of the OC curriculum before jumping track for the final two years under the WSU curriculum to get a WSU degree.

This year’s junior class is at capacity with 19 students, and the number of students in OC’s preparatory classes is simply burgeoning.’ Read more here

Olympic College Awarded Three Grants Totaling $3.3 Million

Olympic College announced it recently received three grants: two grants will provide training in industries expected to grow in Washington state. A third grant will help first generation and low-income students to pursue greater higher education levels needed for the 21st Century workforce. The funding is expected to total $3.3 million over the time period of the grants. The Air Washington grant and Governor’s Investment in Aerospace (GIA) grant provides funds for training in aerospace industry sectors. Read more

Free welding workshop for women at Olympic College – Shelton, Nov. 4

Olympic College in Shelton is inviting women interested in a non-traditional career to come to the free “Women in Welding” workshop on Nov. 4, 2011. Women attending the event can gain hands-on experience at the workshop and weld a decorative metal rose. This free workshop includes all materials, instruction, and lunch. 

 The “Women in Welding” workshop is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 at Olympic College’s Trades Center located at 50 W. Fredson LN, Shelton, WA 98584. Sign-up is free. Space is limited. Please register in advance. Women must be aged 18 or older to participate.

Olympic College to host annual Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Information Night Oct. 18

On the evening of Oct. 18, Olympic College (OC) will host the fourth annual Science, Engineering and Mathematics (SEM) Information Night. This free informational session is for high school students and all those considering careers involving Science, Engineering or Mathematics. $3.3 million in grants help OC expand offerings

Kitsap Sun, Oct. 10, 2011 – ‘Olympic College soon will build on its newest manufacturing program, offer a new program and launch an effort to help students who might otherwise not apply for college.

Record attendance at Olympic College’s largest annual fundraiser

Kitsap Sun, Oct. 10, 2011 – ‘A record-setting number of attendees showed their Olympic College support and dug into their wallets at the college’s largest fundraiser Monday.

The number of attendees, 320, at this year’s event beat the record set in 2006, according to Olympic College Foundation Executive Director Joan Hanten.’ Read more here
